Student Engagement & Wellbeing
The Student Engagement and Wellbeing team at UCHSK operates as a cohesive, multidisciplinary hub dedicated to fostering a school culture where every individual can thrive. Comprising Year Coordinators, school psychologists, youth workers, and executive leaders, this team leverages a diverse range of expertise to solve the problems that matter to our students, their families, and our staff. By moving beyond isolated interventions, we work collaboratively to address the complex social, emotional, and academic barriers that can impact a student's journey. For families, we are a point of partnership and clarity; for staff, we are a source of strategic support and shared expertise. This integrated approach ensures that the "Student Engagement" is more than just a philosophy it is a practical, responsive team that works using a system designed to ensure safety, engagement, and success for our entire school community.
Whole School Classroom Expected Behaviours:
- By adhering to these shared expectations, we ensure that every staff member and student are on the same page, allowing the UCHSK community to thrive through consistency and high expectations.
- Lining Up: Classes line up outside their classroom before entry to ensure a calm and orderly transition into the learning space.
- Bags and Safety: Bags are hung on the back of chairs (off the floor) at all times to maintain a safe, trip-free environment.
- Equipment Readiness: Staff consistently remind students to have their equipment ready for learning, including a charged Chromebook, pens, and correct PE uniform.
- Seating Plans: Teachers use strategic seating plans in every room to optimize classroom engagement and manage social dynamics.
- Out-of-Class Protocol: Students must have a signed Orange Note at all times when they are outside of the classroom during lesson time. Orange notes are distributed to all staffrooms by the wellbeing team.
- Digital Presence: All classes must have an active Google Classroom setup; this includes all subject areas, year level classrooms, and PC classrooms.
- Consistent Communication: Daily notices are read to all students during PC Group to ensure every student is informed of school events and requirements.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Staff send notification letters through SAS to inform families of positive behaviours such as receiving a KARE card and behaviours that require attention such as uniform and in class behaviour.
Our Processes - Challenging Behaviour
At UC High School Kaleen, we believe that responding to student behaviour should be consistent, fair, supportive and focused on learning. Our Teacher Interventions Process provides staff with a clear, graduated approach for responding when minor behaviours are repeated. Teachers work directly with students and families to identify solutions, establish clear expectations and provide opportunities for students to reflect, reset and make positive choices. Where behaviours continue, additional support is progressively introduced through the relevant Faculty School Leader, ensuring students receive the right level of intervention at the right time. This approach promotes shared responsibility, strong relationships and consistent expectations, while keeping students connected to their learning and our school community.
