School Leadership Group Legacy

Welcome to University of Canberra High School Kaleen — a connected, inclusive and future-focused learning community where every student is known, valued and empowered to thrive.

At UC High School Kaleen, we believe education is about far more than academic success. We are committed to preparing young people for a rapidly changing world by creating learning experiences that are authentic, engaging and connected to life beyond the classroom. Through inquiry, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking, our students develop the confidence, adaptability and skills needed to shape their futures with purpose and optimism.

Our work is strongly aligned with the key principles of the ACT Education Directorate’s Future of Education Strategy and Inclusive Education Strategy. We place students at the centre of learning and believe every young person deserves access to high-quality learning opportunities, meaningful inclusion, and a genuine sense of belonging. We foster a culture where student voice and agency are not simply encouraged — they are embedded in the everyday life of our school.

Students at UC High School Kaleen are active partners in shaping our community. Through leadership opportunities, student forums, collaborative decision-making processes and authentic feedback structures, young people play an important role in influencing school direction, culture and learning. We believe students learn best when they have ownership of their learning journey and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

Guided by our KARE values of Kindness, Achievement, Respect and Endeavour, we strive to create a learning environment where high expectations are matched with strong support and genuine care. We celebrate diversity, value individual strengths and ensure all students feel safe, included and empowered to succeed. Our commitment to wellbeing is central to everything we do, recognising that students thrive when they are connected, supported and challenged.

Partnership is also at the heart of our school. We work closely with families, universities, local organisations, industry and community partners to provide students with rich opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. These partnerships help students build aspirations, explore pathways and understand the relevance of their learning within the wider community and future workforce.

As part of the ACT public education system and in partnership with the University of Canberra, we are proud to provide innovative and equitable educational opportunities that inspire curiosity, resilience and lifelong learning. We are committed to nurturing compassionate, capable and informed young people who are prepared to contribute positively to their communities and confidently navigate the future.

University of Canberra High School Kaleen is more than a school — it is a vibrant learning community where students are empowered to lead, grow and make a difference.

School Leadership Group Legacy

As active agents of change, our school leaders leave a tangible legacy each year. Their goal is to positively impact the learning culture, environment, and conditions for all other students that remain. Below are examples of key achievements made by the Student Leadership Group over the past two years.

2024 School Captains Legacy – Identified a strategy to support ALL students to self-manage and self-regulate throughout the school day when they are unable to access phones and computers to check the time or unable to read analogue clocks. Our school now has large digital clocks throughout the school in common areas. As a result of the introduction of these clocks, we have seen a reduction in students arriving late to class, and anecdotal data evidences that students feel less anxious when they are able to independently monitor the time that they have remaining in a particular lesson.

2025 School Captains Legacy – The introduction of one to one devices across all ACT Public Schools brought about many benefits to students and staff, however it also came with pitfalls that needed to be addressed. Analysing evidence of daily screentime usage between the hours of 9am and 3pm for the student population alongside health and wellbeing needs of young people, it was determined that screentime needed to be reduced. We are now 100% tech free throughout the school day when not in formal lessons. This has seen a decrease in daily screentime for a significant number of our students and an increase in social engagement and interaction with peers during unstructured hours at school.

In 2026, our School Leadership group led by House Captains Mieah, Jacob, Ivy and Arlo are working towards one student-centred school improvement goal.
