Core Classes at UCHSK
Core classes form the foundation of every student’s learning program at UC High School Kaleen. From Year 7 through to Year 10, all students participate in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), and Physical Education as non-negotiable areas of study. These subjects are undertaken each semester and provide a clear sequence of learning as students progress from Year 7, into Year 8, Year 9 and ultimately Year 10. In addition, Japanese is studied as a core class by all students in Years 7 and 8, providing students with opportunities to develop language skills alongside an understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture.
Teaching and learning within our core classes is aligned with Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum. Teachers plan learning experiences that address the relevant curriculum content and support students to demonstrate the Achievement Standards for their year level. These standards provide an important reference point for what students are expected to understand and be able to demonstrate by the end of each year of schooling. While the curriculum establishes a common entitlement for all students, the way students access, engage with and demonstrate their learning may look different according to their individual strengths and learning needs.
At UCHSK, our approach to core learning is underpinned by our commitment to meeting every student at their point of need. A student's year level identifies the curriculum they are working towards; however, effective teaching begins with understanding what each learner already knows, understands and can do. Teachers use assessment, achievement data, classroom evidence and knowledge of the learner to identify appropriate entry points and design learning that is accessible, appropriately challenging and responsive. Adjustments, differentiation, scaffolding and extension are embedded into classroom practice so that students can experience both success and growth.
Our core classes therefore provide consistency in what students are entitled to learn, with flexibility in how they are supported to learn it. Across English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, Physical Education and Years 7–8 Japanese, students progressively build the knowledge, skills and capabilities required for future learning and life beyond school. By combining the expectations of the Australian Curriculum with responsive teaching and a strong understanding of individual learners, UCHSK aims to ensure that every student can access meaningful learning, experience appropriate challenge and make measurable progress from their individual starting point.
