The Arts
As one of the eight areas of learning, the Arts includes Visual Art, Dance and Music. In 2006 Year 7 students will study Visual Art and Music.
Music
The year 7 music program begins with learning music through the Kodaly system. This involves the teaching of music through singing. Through a variety of songs the student learns the basic fundamentals of music. These are rhythm, pitch, notation and performance. This method is continued through to Year 8 where the students take the knowledge and skills they have learnt and apply it to performing music on a guitar.
A band program is currently on line. This enables students to learn an instrument during class and allows time for the band to rehearse. Every lunchtime a different section of the band is taken for more intense tuition to develop student’s individual ability. The band accepts all students who wish to play an instrument.
A choir also meets one lunchtime for rehearsal.
Visual Arts
In Year 7 students will experience the Visual Art concepts, Colour, Line, Texture, Shape and Form as motivation for drawings, prints, paintings, paper cuts, collages and sculptures. Students will study natural and human-made objects in relation to the above concepts to help stimulate a critical assessment of the world around them. Students will develop a basic understanding of the ways Visual Art has contributed to and enhanced our historical, cultural and personal values. These concepts are extended in Year 8 and include a wider range of media.
Distinct units may be elected in Year 9 and 10 and students will learn the specialist skills and techniques involved in these units.
Dance
In years 9 & 10 students are offered the opportunity to participate in the AusDance Dance festival. This is offered as an extra curricular activity and involves rehearsals and choreography meetings that will take place during lunchtimes.
Students then perform at the Canberra Theatre during an evening in third term.
