Principal's Message
This website contains brief information for staff, students and families about our school. More detailed information can be found in the prospectus and student handbook.
We encourage students and staff to participate fully in the life of the school. There are many opportunities to develop talents by entering competitions, participating in sporting activities at school and ACT level, membership of the school band and other activities such as SRC, Quest and other community service activities.
Students and parents often ask “Why come to high school? We know how important primary school is – learning to read, write, do arithmetic and get on with each other; and we know that college prepares us for work or further study; but what is high school for?”
The high school years are an important time for students. It is the time when young adolescents, children, become young adults.
It is the time when students:
- adjust to some profound changes: physical, social, emotional and intellectual.
- grow toward independence
- gain experience in decision making, and in accepting responsibility for these decisions
- develop positive self confidence through achieving success in significant events
- progressively develop a sense of self and of personal and social values
- establish their own sexual identity
- experience social acceptance, and gain affection and support among peers
- think in ways that become more abstract and reflective
- become more aware of the social and political world and gain skill in coping and interacting with that world
- establish or maintain relationships with particular adults ‑ provide advice/role models.
These developmental tasks are very complex and the work of Kaleen High School is to assist our young women and men to achieve this transformation.
We do this through programs that deliver:
1. Success for students in a core of knowledge and competencies/skills that is valued by all parties
- By gaining experience and knowledge in a range of subject areas
- Developing literacy, numeracy, problem solving and thinking skills
- Extending all students in all areas of education, especially developing their strengths and interests
2. Positive and sustained personal and social development as young adolescents
My staff and I take great pride in nurturing the individual skills of each student at Kaleen High School. We recognise and respond to both strengths and opportunities of each student and develop a strong partnership with parents and carers to see a successful journey through the high school years.
Please feel free to contact me about any aspect of the school's function in our community.
