Languages - Japanese

Japanese studies at UC High School Kaleen provide students with the opportunity to understand the unique traditional and popular modern culture and language. Japan is our major Asian trading partner and tourism in Australia creates the need for speakers of Japanese.

Year 7

Students will follow an introductory Japanese unit

Topics will include:

  • Greetings, names, age, birthdays, animals, telephone numbers, addresses, colours, family, classroom expressions and objects
  • Locations and basic geography of the country
  • Hiragana script

Year 8

Year 8 students will continue learning Japanese at an appropriate level.

Topics will include:

  • School subjects, sports and leisure activities, food and drink, going places, weather and time
  • In-depth study of Japanese culture.
  • Katakana and simple Kanji characters

Years 9 and 10

Japanese is an elective and students who continue Japanese will have a "working knowledge" in the language and be well equipped to enrol in a 'continuing' course at college.

In all years there is a strong emphasis on the development of speaking and listening skills.
